Bo City residents, led by Mayor Kobba Musa, came together in mourning to bid farewell to Lansana Sheriff, known as Steady Bongo, who tragically passed away in a road accident on December 7, 2024, along the Bo-Gendema Highway. Steady Bongo was on his way to entertain his fans when the accident occurred. His body has been kept for a befitting burial, honoring his legendary status in Sierra Leone’s music industry.

Steady Bongo, celebrated for his storytelling abilities and humility, has left a profound impact on the nation with hundreds of songs and several albums. His music career began at Methodist Secondary School in Kailahun, where he gained popularity through the school’s drama group and football team. He later moved to Freetown, where he polished his craft and gained global attention, particularly with his song “Youthman,” which advocated for the youth and earned him the title of a national treasure.

On December 22, thousands of people in Bo City gathered to pay their last respects as his remains were brought to the city. Mayor Kobba Musa called Steady Bongo’s death a national loss, encouraging parents, fans, and musicians to emulate his legacy. Overwhelmed with emotion, he thanked the people of Bo City for their overwhelming turnout.

Jeneba Jinuma Koroma, chairlady of the Cultural Artistes Union in the Southern Region, described Steady Bongo as a mentor who supported the union and its members. Her tribute was cut short by tears as she saw the casket.

Moses Lahai, former president of the Bo Artistes Union and CEO of Blessed Moo Music, urged President Bio to declare the date of Steady Bongo’s death a national holiday. He called on everyone to support the late musician’s family, a sentiment echoed by DJ Black Snoop, who pledged to hold shows every February in Steady Bongo’s honor.

Moijueh Kaikai, chief organizer of the funeral arrangements, dismissed rumors of foul play, confirming that Steady Bongo died from head injuries sustained in the accident. The casket, draped in Sierra Leone’s national flag, was then taken to Daru to be buried in Bonbohun on December 23.

Steady Bongo’s legacy will continue to inspire and unite Sierra Leoneans, reflecting the power of music to transcend boundaries and bring communities together.
